  • What does smart beauty mean to you?

I’m so excited to be joining the team of bloggers here at Smart Beauty Guide! I’m Jo-Lynne Shane -- a wife and mom to three young kids, trying to stay fabulous after 40 and sharing my escapades on my blog.

We live in the suburbs of Philly, and I spend most of my time hiding behind my computer screen, tapping out my thoughts and sharing recipes and fashion advice with other moms like me who are trying to get through the day in one piece!

  • Smart beauty and a high school reunion

    By Ron Robinson

I won't tell you my exact age, but my 30th high school reunion is coming up (you do the math). I’m nervous. Although I’m excited to see my old friends and catch up, I feel stressed, too. As I walk in will my classmates immediately see how old I got? Will my high school chums even recognize me?

I know this sounds a bit obsessive (and narcissistic even), but your overall appearance isn’t just based on “looking good” -- being both active and proactive can do wonders for the health of your body, which evidently transfers to how you look on the outside.

  • Younger? Better? Or Not? What plastic surgeries really make a difference?

A recent study published in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery made headlines with “surprising” results showing that one surgeon’s cosmetic surgeries made almost no impact on patients’ attractiveness, and made minimal impact on how youthful they looked.

  • How stress can make you unattractive

The body is a wondrous thing, is it not? From the intricate workings of your innards to the magnificent mechanics of your outers, the human body is rife with bells, whistles, and countless charms. But that’s not to say it’s all unicorns and rainbows. How can it be, when stress and its corresponding hormone cortisol are lying in wait for the least little stressor to occur, at which point it infiltrates, wreaking havoc on your skin, hair, and nails. It’s all downright stressful. And thus the whole process starts again.

  • What is Smart Beauty?

With the launch of the new Smart Beauty Guide website you have a terrific resource to help you learn about cosmetic procedures and choose the best doctor to help you achieve great results. But it begs the question, what is “Smart Beauty”? It means making smart choices. That is, choosing the right procedures and the right doctor. There are lots of resources out there to help you make good choices, but you have to do your homework. It’s easy to just go wherever your friend went for her breast augmentation, or find the cheapest price for your Botox or tummy tuck. But that’s not so smart.

  • Bursting the bubble on skincare misconceptions

Who gives a flying fig about such trivial things as facts? You guessed it — we here at Smart Beauty do! From generations old wives tales to the marketing of “modern technology,” there is no shortage of skin-care misconceptions being touted as the truth. And while fairy-tales and false assumptions are entertaining, they’re not all that helpful when it comes to making decisions about taking care of your skin. So get those safety pins out — and prepare to burst some skin-care belief bubbles!

  • Smart beauty starts with you

When the good folks at ASAPS asked me to consider what our new masthead, “Smart Beauty” meant to me, it got me thinking.

By definition, the word ‘beauty’ means: a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially sight. But whose sight exactly? And who chooses what qualities contribute to someone being deemed beautiful?

  • Over 35? Beauty takes brains

There’s a song from the musical, “Chorus Line,” that says it all. “Dance 10, looks 3, and I’m still on unemployment……” In other words, looks count! There is very little choice but to keep striving to remain beautiful no matter how expensive, labor intensive or how superficial you deem this pursuit. Youth takes care of the young, so let’s forget the young for now. Our problem is: How do you remain beautiful when you’re over 35? My premise is that it takes brains.

What is Smart Beauty and can you use a GPS to get there?
