Thank you for submitting your question - it is a common topic that is asked in the office. Breast reduction surgery can provide many benefits in the right patient. The best results come when you are at a healthy and stable weight for 4-6 months prior to surgery and have a good exercise and nutrition plan in place. Losing weight may or may not change your breast size. When considering breast reduction surgery, consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area and have a detailed discussion about your goals and timing for surgery. Thank you for your question - it is a great one. Scars evolve and mature over time and it generally takes 9-12 months for a scar to be fully formed. There are many ways to treat and improve scars. Silicone sheeting can be helpful, laser treatments can help soften the scar and improve color, and lastly, surgical scar revision may be required to optimize your result. Smoking, or use of any form of nicotine causes constriction of the blood vessels and can hinder blood supply to areas trying to heal. Good blood flow is key to delivering oxygen, antibiotics, and removing inflammation after surgery. Smokers are at higher risk for postoperative complications including skin necrosis, delayed healing, and infection. It is best to be honest with your surgeon about smoking and develop a plan with him/her that provides the safest result for you - even if that means delaying your procedure to stop smoking for several weeks prior to surgery. You only get one chance to heal up after surgery so take the necessary steps to give yourself the best chance at achieving your desired result.

Thank you for submitting your question. It is somewhat difficult to answer without photographs to assess the nature of skin loss. The face is remarkably very forgiving and many small areas of tissue necrosis go on to heal nicely with local wound care, time, and patience. Scars can take 9-12 months to fully mature. It is best to consult with your surgeon and partner with him/her to develop both a short and long-term plan. Every surgeon experiences complications from time to time and the good ones know how to take a deep breath and help you get through a frustrating time. Because scars evolve and mature over time, it is generally prudent not to rush into a scar revision before 6-9 months from final healing. Best wishes on a speedy recovery and great result.
