Is there a way to tell how long a silicone breast implant has been leaking or ruptured?

Most can be identified with high definition ultrasound or MRI. Several times on mammogram there are indications. I have had instances where mammograms don't accurately describe the situation that is found in the operating room.
Hi. Not simply by examination or even imaging. If you had a traumatic event, it may help guide the estimate. An implant that has ruptured, but the capsule (normal scar tissue surrounding the implant) is intact, will not permit any egress and contact with breast tissue. On MRI, it is usually possible to detect changes consistent with intra or extra capsule material and the integrity of the implant. It is recommended that you have an in person consultation for immediate removal of a failed implant. Please choose a board certified Plastic Surgeon. Best wishes, Dr. Doolabh
