With the stigma surrounding plastic surgery subsiding, I’m seeing a growing influx of men coming into my practice for an aesthetic procedure and it isn’t limited to my practice either. In fact, over the past five years, the number of men undergoing plastic surgery has gone up by a whopping 43%, according to the annual statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). More than ever, the media is playing a significant role in how men are feeling about themselves and influencing their decision to undergo plastic surgery. Since the release of the movie “Magic Mike,” I’ve noticed more men looking to get a toned, fit body similar to Channing Tatum’s character, Mike. Likewise, I’ve combined a number of procedures into what I refer to as The Magic Mike; sculpting the abdomen, shoulders and chest utilizing fat harvested from areas where it is less desirable, to inject into specific regions creating an athletic toned, fit aesthetic where it counts.

The primary concern most of my male patients is fat in their abdominal region and waistline, that they can’t seem to lose regardless of how much they have dieted and exercised. The Magic Mike procedure is a step in the right direction for men who already take care of themselves by eating right and working out – and are looking to add definition to their body, but just can’t achieve the desired result without a little additional intervention.

The Magic Mike is a two-and-a-half-hour procedure performed under general anesthesia, which consists of liposuction, harvesting fat from problem areas such as the stomach and flanks, and then reinjecting it into the rectus muscle, abdomen and shoulders. Fat has revolutionized body sculpting in plastic surgery. It is truly “‘liquid gold.” It takes on the properties of the area into which it is injected, which in this case are the muscles. I sculpt the abdomen to get a more pronounced six pack along with the shoulders and chest to achieve a masculine appearance. In some cases, male patients want some of the fat injected into their buttocks. As men age, they lose volume in that area, so this makes a lot of sense in terms of completing the overall look. This is however, a separate procedure from The Magic Mike.

The satisfaction of this procedure comes with an improved sense of body image, which leads to greater self-esteem. The majority of men that are searching for a way to contour their bodies are between the ages of 20 to 50 years. It seems like a large age gap, but that just proves that men do not cease to care about their bodies and how they feel regardless of their age.

Not to be confused with a “Daddy Makeover," The Magic Mike procedure focuses on toning and sculpting the overall body shape, while the Daddy Makeover is usually a combination of procedures addressing both face and body.

The advantage of transferring a person’s own fat, also known as fat grafting is that the body will not reject it because it doesn’t involve the use of a foreign substance or implant. Additional advantages using fat to sculpt the body include better overall results in terms of definition, highly adjustable outcomes and smaller incisions compared to surgery involving implanted devices. Men who are seeking The Magic Mike procedure should be in relatively good health, and shape to begin with. The recovery process generally takes about 7 to 10 days and patients can return to their full scope of normal activities in about a month. The final results can be seen 3 to 6 months after the procedure. I advise patients not to wear tight clothing during recovery and to have their recovery garment on for 3 to 6 weeks. For patients who’ve undergone The Magic Mike procedure, it is best to sleep on their back since the procedures are in the chest area; however if they undergo buttock augmentation in addition to Magic Mike, I recommend sleeping on the side and not put any pressure on the buttocks for about 2 to 3 months.

The Magic Mike procedure doesn’t replace a healthy diet and exercise. Think of it as a supplement - helping you eliminate diet and exercise-resistant fat while defining the chest, abdomen and shoulders to achieve a masculine appearance.
