What is Transgender Surgery?
Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Sheldon Lincenberg explains transgender surgery and the preparation involved before undergoing this type of surgery.
“There are a multitude of surgeries, they differ somewhat whether you are transitioning from male to female or vice versa. Often times the first surgery is the masculinization or the feminization of the chest and torso,” Dr. Lincenberg explains. “Many patients then undergo contouring of their facial structures, only a small percentage of patients change their genital area.”
Dr. Lincenberg notes that patients undergoing transgender surgery are often very informed and educated; they have been thinking about gender transition for many years.
“By the time that patient comes to me, they have gone through counseling for years and transitioned in their daily lifestyle from their clothing choices to job choices, and hobbies. Their hormone level is monitored by an endocrinologist,” he notes.
Bruce Jenner’s transition into a woman has put the spotlight on this issue. “My patients are thrilled that this has become a mainstream topic of conversation, and they are able to be proud of who they are,” notes Dr. Lincenberg.
