Meet Dr. R. Laurence Berkowitz – Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery
One of the most experienced plastic surgeons in the Greater Bay Area, Dr. Berkowitz has treated thousands of patients during his 40-year career following his teaching position at Stanford. His practice is focused primarily on rhinoplasty and facial rejuvenation. As the incoming president of The Rhinoplasty Society, he has dedicated the latter part of his career to obtaining the most refined results with minimal downtime. “Rhinoplasty is one of the most challenging aesthetic procedures but can be the most rewarding when planned and done with thought and precision,” he says. “I only perform one rhinoplasty a day to give full attention to each individual, and I aim to preserve the identity and ethnicity of each patient.”

Our doctor-patient relationships and the longevity of our practice. I have treated three generations in Los Gatos, Campbell and Silicon Valley since 1982.

Professional Background
Dr. Berkowitz was born in Youngstown, Ohio. His father was a Reform Judaism rabbi, while his mother was a professor of Romance Languages at Kent State University. During his youth, he became aware of the need for plastic surgery when his father, who had been born with a cleft lip, was denied surgery as an infant due to his own parents’ inability to pay the fee of the Chicago surgeon. The manual dexterity he displayed as a child prompted Dr. Berkowitz’s father to direct him toward becoming a surgeon.
At the University of Michigan, Dr. Berkowitz graduated with honors in art history, where he developed his particular fascination with architecture. What man can do with his hands, following the laws of nature, became his mantra as he pursued a career as a plastic surgeon at the University of Michigan.
There, he inaugurated the first combined general surgery/plastic surgery program under the direction of the great educator, the late William C. Grabb, and the most famous plastic surgeon of that time, the late Dr. Reed Dingman.
Dr. Berkowitz pursued plastic surgery with a passion, and was especially engrossed in the challenging process of giving a child a chance at life by repairing a cleft lip and palate. He traveled the world with the Interplast Organization leading scores of trips to a dozen sites over two decades. He was greatly influenced by his mentor at Stanford, Dr. Donald Laub. He was recruited to Stanford as a faculty member and was director of the Burn Unit at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
When establishing his private practice in what was just beginning to be known as the Silicon Valley, Dr. Berkowitz brought along his skills, compassion, and curiosity to a new community that exemplified the very best in innovation and modernity.
As a member of The Aesthetic Society, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and The Rhinoplasty Society, he has funneled his academic interest into the postgraduate teaching of young plastic surgeons in the area of breast surgery, facial rejuvenation, and especially rhinoplasty. He is on the board of directors of the Rhinoplasty Society.
As a lecturer, Dr. Berkowitz continues to teach his skills throughout North America, South America, and Europe. He has authored scores of articles on rhinoplasty, facial rejuvenation, and surgery of the breast.

To meet the high level of care and safety we wanted for our patients, we built the Aesthetx Surgery Center, an outstanding, fully-accredited private surgery suite used exclusively for our plastic surgery procedures.

The Aesthetx Surgery Center provides the comforting, relaxing environment and privacy every patient needs. Not only is the Surgery Center exclusively for Aesthetx patients and Aesthetx patients only, but the floor plan was built specifically to provide privacy and personalized care for our patients. That means every patient will get to have the space they need to recover in a private way. At any point, there is always only one patient in the surgery suite at a time, so that we can provide them with our undivided attention.
We have a wonderful team, starting with Dr. Berkowitz and their favorite board-certified anesthesiologists, along with a highly train group of certified operating room technicians, and registered nurses who are specialized in plastic surgery treatment and care.
Technology
To uphold his passion for innovation, Dr. Berkowitz has equipped the private surgery suite with the latest technology and devices. Our surgery suite is currently furnished with Stryker Medical Equipment, and a remarkable system that allows for voice activation of surgical equipment like lights and endoscopic cameras. With automation of certain processes, the surgeon can perform certain procedures with ease so they can fully focus on your procedure.
Safety
As a fully-accredited surgical suite, the Aesthetx Surgery Center upholds safety standards at the hospital level. To be accredited, we put our surgical suite up to the stringent inspection of an independent organization, the American Association of Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF), a nationally recognized organization providing accreditation for surgical centers. That means every staff member, piece of equipment, procedure, machinery, and so much more have met incredibly high levels of safety standards.
The building materials in the suite, from smooth tiled surfaces, wainscoting, and rubber flooring in the operating room, were installed specifically to allow for extensive cleaning and safe usage. In addition, we also use the Steris System to clean all instruments before they’re sterilized with steam. Aesthetx has taken every precaution to make our private surgical suite the epitome of cutting-edge, safety, and comfort
