How far forward on the face is numbness normal after a face lift, lower lid, and neck lift?

My numbness is felt everywhere my beard would be, except upper lip and frontal portion of my chin. It's driving me crazy. Is it normal to have numbness that far forward on the face, including cheeks?

Numbness of the cheeks, neck and lower lids after a facelift is a normal side effect and not a complication. The extent of the numbness and how long it lasts depends on the extent of the procedure, varies from patient to patient, and generally diminishes over a period of months, up to a year post surgery.

If you have concerns, you should discuss them with your plastic surgeon.

Numbness in the area under the beard is very normal after a facelift as the procedure elevates the skin in this area, thus separating the skin from its normal nerve innervation. The chin is supplied by the mental nerve which is not injured with a facelift. The area under the eyes is supplied by the infraorbital nerve. This is also not injured with a facelift, though it may be injured during a lower blepharoplasty or mid-facelift. The sensation you have will vary from total anesthesia to tingling and then to normal sensation as the nerves reinnervate the area. This process may take up to a year or more.

Numbness after a facelift is very common and is the norm. A large part depends of the type of facelift and extent of the skin dissection. Discuss this with your plastic surgeon to make sure all is going well. Good Luck.
