Houston couple provided illegal implants
A Houston couple was arrested Nov. 1 for performing a range of unauthorized plastic surgery procedures, including breast implants, liposuction and body contouring, the Houston Chronicle reported. According to the news source, Yuri and Karen Lara were providing the procedures from their home, where authorities discovered medical equipment and containers of the body-numbing prescription drug Lidocaine, which is often used during surgery or dental work.
The couple was arrested after a 41-year-old woman showed up at a local hospital with complications from a breast enhancement surgery. According to the source, the woman, who told authorities that she has visited the Laras' home for numerous plastic surgery procedures, had an infection in her implants.
Harris County police are currently searching for more patients who received cosmetic procedures from the Laras, and those with any information are urged to call the Harris County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Bureau.
Illegal plastic surgery procedures are widespread throughout the U.S. The Associated Press reported last August that doctors have seen a rise in black-market buttocks injections that use silicone or a silicone-like substance - a procedure not typically performed by board-certified plastic surgeons. However, the news source stated that it is hard to track the number of unauthorized plastic surgery procedures because they are less likely to be reported.
