What Does Smart Beauty Mean to Me?

If you had asked me for my definition of Smart Beauty when I was 21 years old, I would have immediately responded with, "Flawless skin, a size 2 waist, legs that go on for days, high cheekbones, full lips and a turned up nose." I think back to who that girl was and I want to take her face in my hands and tell her that smart beauty - real beauty starts from deep within you. It emanates from you and it’s a light that can't be extinguished. It’s the pink flush on your cheeks when you feel happy, the twinkle in your eyes that seems to dance with abandon and it is the spark that lives within you. So, at 41 years old I believe real, smart beauty is about accepting yourself and realizing that your physical body is an extension of your spiritual life. That being said, when you feed your soul, that too feeds the physical body you inhabit. Smart Beauty is about choosing to eat a piece of fruit at 10 p.m. instead of going for those chocolate chip cookies, because you want to feed and treat your body to the best possible fuel. Smart beauty for me is about getting a good night's sleep, because I know I need to give my body the rest it craves.

And as a mother to a teenage daughter, Smart Beauty is remembering that every action and every word out of my lips is guiding how my daughter defines her own beauty. So in that regard, Smart Beauty is teaching her that there are certain aspects of one's physical body that can't ever change and reminding her that she needs to see those characteristics as part of what makes her unique. Smart Beauty is about instilling my daughter with the belief
that her confidence and self-esteem is not only predicated on her physical appearance but on her actions and her voice and her ability to pursue her passions.

Most of all, Smart Beauty is about taking care of myself from the inside out -from feeding my soul with luscious literature and smart indie films to meaningful relationships and healing thoughts. It is about feeding my body with healthy foods, exercising it and giving it the rest it needs. It is also about growing older with as much grace as I possibly can and indulging in a few creams and medical procedures that don't define me, but just slightly refine me, and keep the essence of who I am intact. Ultimately Smart Beauty is also about being open to the idea that we live in an age where we have access to so many medical technologies and products that can enhance who we are and as such, we need to be smart about the choices we make.

I hope you will follow me on my journey to find out the latest Smart Beauty health, wellness and surgical procedures that will not necessarily radically change your innate beauty but will simply allow your inner (and outer ) glow to shine.
