How An Increase in Variety of Breast Implants is Influencing the Way Plastic Surgeons Perform Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation was the second most popular surgical procedure in 2014 with 286,694 surgeries performed. Dr. Douglas L. Forman, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in Washington D.C. explains how an increase in breast implant variety has influenced the way plastic surgeons perform breast augmentation.
“An area that has seen a lot of change in the past five years has been the breast implants. Not only are we focusing most on silicone breast implants, but we now have shaped implants available. We have a large array of implants that we can choose from, so we try to match the implant to the patient. Before we only had several types of generic implants available,” explains Dr. Forman.
Most patients don’t want to look done; they want natural-looking results. “They don’t want their implants to enter the room before they do,” notes Dr. Forman.
With several FDA approved breast implants on the market today, plastic surgeons and patients have more options to choose from individualizing the implant to the patient.
